A Sarajevo organization launched a campaign to promote the importance of family in the lives of gays and lesbians in Bosnia. The campaign was launched ahead of the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia, IDAHOT.
Sarajevo Open Center‘s “Love is what makes a family” campaign utilizes outdoor billboards and social networks to raise awareness on the importance of supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and intersex people, whether the support came from family members or from partners and friends.
The campaign billboards feature 24 people coming from different family settings. The organization said it is the first campaign in Bosnia in which LGBTI persons and their friends and families participate.
“In recent years, more and more LGBTI persons are subjected to domestic violence. Parents, sisters, brothers and other relatives of those persons have locked them up, forced them to undergo treatments, kicked them out, threatened them, blackmailed them, and continually abused them,” said Sarajevo Open Center.
Family should be a place of support and understanding rather than a place of rejection, suffering and violence, the organization said.
“Therefore, in such situations, support is extremely important to LGBTI persons, and it should come from family, friends, acquaintances and partners as well.”
