The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, known around the world for its annual Academy Awards, The “Oscars“, extended a membership invitation this year to a Bosnian female director, Aida Begić. 774 film professionals are invited to join the honorary organization this year. The Academy has some six thousand members.
Women, minorities and foreign artists were less represented in the American organization, but the number of membership invitations for professionals from minority groups is the highest ever this year.
Aida Begić was born on May 9, 1976 in Sarajevo. She is a writer and director, known for Snijeg (2008), Djeca (2012) and Prvo smrtno iskustvo (2001). Her new film, a feature about Syrian children refugees and their lives marked by the trauma of a civil war, is expected to be released soon. Begić has been visiting refugee camps in Turkey to hear firsthand about the predicament of people who fled the war-torn Mideastern nation. She also held workshops at which she cast child actors for “Orphan”.
