A New Zealand national was arrested as he tried to board a flight at Sarajevo airport with a stash of bayonets, machine gun ammunition and other military equipment in his suitcase, police said. The man was taken to custody by the border police at the airport and handed over to the state prosecution. He will be charged with illicit trade in arms and objects that can be used as weapon.
The Balkans is a major source for European arms traffickers, with the weapons produced in the former Yugoslavia and used during the wars in the 1990s still widely sought by western criminal circles, reported AFP. According to a 2013 United Nations estimate, some 3.5 million Bosnians illegally possess some 750,000 weapons, despite a number of attempts to collect them after the 1992-1995 war.
