At least 426 persons committed suicide in Bosnia last year. The figure is almost equally divided between the country’s two entities, the Federation and Republika Srpska, reported Anadolu Agency.
Men are still more likely to commit suicide in Bosnia. In the Federation, where the annual suicide rate climbed by 14.6%, 165 men and 54 women committed suicide in 2017. In Republika Srpska, 155 men and 52 women took their lives.
The law enforcement in Brčko District recorded eight suicides from January to October 2017, all male.
The prevailing suicide method in Bosnia is by hanging. Firearms are the second most common choice.
According to the World Health Organization, six in 100,000 Bosnians commit suicide every year – a rate that is still lower than in the other countries of the Western Balkans region.
